Understanding persistent pain
Neuroplasticity and persistent pain
The nervous system—the brain, spinal cord, and nerves—can adapt to experience. This ability to change is called neuroplasticity. For some people, the nervous system becomes more sensitive and continues to send pain signals over time.
Persistent pain is real. It can be real even when a scan or test does not show one clear cause. Neuroplasticity does not mean pain is imagined, and changing your thoughts does not guarantee a cure.
Some people explore pain education, pacing, gentle movement, sleep support, or emotional-wellbeing strategies. These are options to discuss with your clinician, based on your needs and preferences; they are not a replacement for medical care.
